What is TVET? Who regulates TVET in Kenya? What institutions fall under TVET?

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is education and training that equips learners with practical, technical, vocational and entrepreneurial skills needed for employment, self-employment and further education and training.

TVET covers a wide range of occupational areas, including engineering, ICT, agriculture, hospitality, business, building and construction, health-related programmes, automotive technology and other technical and vocational fields.

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) is the statutory body responsible for regulating and coordinating TVET in Kenya. It was established under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Act, 2013.

TVETA's functions include registration, licensing and accreditation of TVET institutions, programmes and trainers, inspection and quality assurance, approval of programmes and recognition/equation of TVET qualifications.

It is important to distinguish the roles of the various TVET bodies: TVETA regulates and assures quality; other statutory bodies have responsibilities relating to curriculum development, assessment, certification, funding and qualifications frameworks.

TVET is delivered through public and private institutions and other training providers. Major categories include:

  • National Polytechnics
  • Technical Training Institutes (TTIs)
  • Technical and Vocational Colleges (TVCs)
  • Vocational Training Centres (VTCs)
  • Special Needs TVET institutions

TVETA maintains the official register of institutions that are registered and licensed to offer TVET programmes. The register includes institutions such as National Polytechnics, TVCs and VTCs, among others

You can find a TVET institution near you by using the TVET Authority (TVETA) Register of Accredited TVET Institutions (tveta.go.ke) or (https://www.tvet.go.ke/our-institutions). The register allows you to search and filter institutions by county, category, type and registration status.

You can also search for a specific TVET course on the TVETA website. The course directory shows institutions offering particular courses and their registration status.

Before choosing an institution, check that it is registered and licensed by TVETA and that the institution is approved to offer your preferred course.

To verify an institution:

Visit the TVETA Accredited TVET Institutions Register.
Search for the institution by name or registration number.
Confirm that its status is “Registered and Licensed.”
Check the licence expiry date.
Confirm that the specific course you want to study is approved and offered by that institution.

Where applicable, check whether the institution has the legal mandate to award the relevant qualification. TVETA maintains a separate register of institutions with a legal mandate to award academic qualifications.
